History and Recovery

Restore earlier local snapshots while keeping a separate backup strategy.

Chukke records a local history snapshot before a content-changing save. History lives in the app’s macOS application-data container rather than inside your workspace.

Retention limits

History is intentionally bounded:

  • one retained version per five-minute period
  • up to 50 versions per document
  • up to 500 MB across all history

Older snapshots are removed as these limits are reached.

Inspect and restore

Open the History panel for a document to browse snapshots, inspect a diff, and restore the version you choose. A restore follows the same reviewable workflow as other document changes.

Legacy history

Chukke can import verified legacy .specpad_history/ snapshots. The old workspace folder is not removed automatically. Removal is offered only after the source snapshots remain verified against the imported copies.

Backup considerations

History is a recovery convenience for recent edits. It does not preserve every version forever, and clearing application data removes it. Keep important work in Git, Time Machine, or another complete backup system.

Clear local history

Use Chukke Settings to clear app-owned history. This does not delete the original documents in your workspace.
